Vertical Gardens Indoors and Out

The benefits of vertical gardens can be limitless. Indoors it can be the ultimate organic wallpaper, or a way to infuse more oxygen in a closed environment. Outdoors, a vertical wall adds more square footage for growing greens or simply creates a living wall. These are some of my favorite photos from the web and garden tours around San Diego. One of the most popular methods of creating vertical greenery on a wall is with : Woollypocket.com This web site has everything you need to get started on this project.

Wine Barrel Container Gardening

Early Girl Tomato Plant & Wine Barrel Container

Raised planters provide extra room for gardening and using wine, or whiskey barrels has become very popular. These barrels add a bit more character and rustic charm for tomato vines and rose bushes. Last year I started off with adding barrels for planting blueberries then slowly added on rose bushes, dwarf citrus, a floral container and some for tomatoes. The key to a successful barrel planter is to drill out holes on the bottom for water drainage and supply water lines for easy maintenance. The soil in raised planters need to be fed continuously, so check with your local garden store about organic amendments specific for what is grown. For example, blueberries need acidic soil and using Azalea mix is the perfect soil for this plant, without it the blueberries may never produce.

Create drainage holes at the bottom of the barrel with a large drill bit.

Saturday Garden Dig

I got to spend an hour in the garden today – yahoo for Saturday! I dug up some end of the season tomatoes along with ready-to-pick heirloom carrots and radishes. They looked so homegrown, organic and fresh in this wooden box that I had to take a photo and share it.

♥ Enjoy the weekend and Happy Gardening! ♥

October Vegetable Planting Guide- Southern California :)

It’s time to plant a Fall Garden!

I’ve planted several tomato plants that are supposed to produce in the early winter months, several heirloom carrots, radishes and peas together in my raised planter bed. I was excited to find a tomato hybrid called “San Francisco Fog’ which grows well in the morning fog and cloudy conditions.

Radishes are always very rewarding because they grow so quickly. I especially like these “Rainbow Radishes” from Renee’s Seeds for the beautiful color variety.

Carrots are always a winner in the garden with so many types to choose from. Pouring very hot water over the seeds and covering them with seed starter soil will help them to germinate and grow faster.

Heirloom Carrots grow year round in my garden

Here is a list of some easy to grow vegetables to plant this month in ground, raised or planter style gardens. Fall can be a favorite time to garden with the temperatures still warm enough to grow a variety of vegetables, but not too hot to enjoy tending a garden.

OCTOBER PLANTING GUIDE:

BEETS- Home grown are always best when it comes to flavor. The leaves from beets are an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, sodium and have higher iron than spinach.

BROCCOLI- Check out this recipe for Cream of Broccoli soup!

CABBAGE- Try these open pollinated heirloom seeds from Victory Seeds.

CARROTS- Seed Tape is a great way to plant carrots… easy and simple. Carrots come in many  shapes and colors, try them all.

COLLARDS- A must if you are from the south.

LETTUCE- Lettuce can be grown all year long, but grows the best in the cooler weather.

FAVAS – KALE – LEEKS – PARSLEY

RADISH- Try out Rainbow Radishes from Renee’s Seeds.

Garden Craft Favorites

Here are a few of my favorite garden crafts found on websites this past year that are very simple to make and are lovely “green gifts” .

Rock Art: Glue magazine pictures on a rock and finish it with a top coat of outdoor furniture 'clear coat' (or clear nail polish). Use as a Garden Marker or Paper-Weight. This is a personal favorite made by my kids which has lasted for years.

Vegetable Stamps for stationary, or use fabric paints for imprinting T-Shirts. A real Green Garden Craft idea. This is a Marthasteward.com photo.

Contact Paper wrapped around food cans make a great succulent or cactus planter. Photo: Online Google Image.

Super Cute Plant Markers painted on rocks. How simple and easy… I think this is a great gift idea for kids to make, or for the artist who can really paint up a beautiful rock for a gardening gift!

Create a bird feeder from a dried out sunflower. Poke a wire or string through the top and hang out for birds to enjoy.
