Chicweed in Solana Beach, CA is AMAZING! This outdoor garden shop on Cedros Street is a succulent lover’s paradise and a designers inspiration. Potted succulents and landscape design are their specialty with the potted succulents made on site at the outdoor potting bench. Look around and you will find living Christmas ornaments, outdoor rugs, bistro tables and outdoor showers made with mosaic tiles. The following photos will tell it all… check this place out and then have lunch or dinner down the street at the Wild Note Cafe, I promise you will not be disappointed!

♥ At the Encinitas Fall Fair this past weekend a few vendors got clever with succulents and seashells. These were created by “Plant Kreations”.

Vertical Gardens Indoors and Out

The benefits of vertical gardens can be limitless. Indoors it can be the ultimate organic wallpaper, or a way to infuse more oxygen in a closed environment. Outdoors, a vertical wall adds more square footage for growing greens or simply creates a living wall. These are some of my favorite photos from the web and garden tours around San Diego. Encinitas Surfing Madonna- Day Trip

The perfect day trip in Encinitas for art, organic coffee, water wise landscaping and a California burrito. I suggest you hurry though as the rogue art Surfing Madonna aka: Our Lady of Encinitas may be removed from this location soon.

♥ Start out your trip on foot by parking near the Lofty Bean Coffee Bar on Hwy 101 and Encinitas Blvd where organic coffee is their specialty. Pleasant employees and pastries (hey that rhymes) welcome you in this beach side retreat. Sit outside with your cup of joe and enjoy the ocean air and people watch as beach-goers head for the sand. Ask the barista for a bag of used coffee grounds (completely organic) to take home and blend into your garden soil. This is a great way to start composting and bring life to your azaleas and acid loving plants. Check out the positive reviews for The Lofty Bean on Yelp.

♥ Walk only 1/2 a block South to the corner of Hwy 101 and Encinitas Blvd. and cross the street going East another short 1/2 block to check out the Surfing Madonna underneath the train overpass. This mosaic was placed by an un-kown artist in April with the purpose of bringing awareness to “Save the Ocean”. See related links for full story and controversies surrounding this art piece. ♥ After checking out “Our Lady of Encinitas” head directly West on foot to Moonlight Beach, one of Encinitas’ finest that offers a snack bar, volleyball courts, showers, children’s play area, bathrooms and benches under palm trees. Rent beach chairs, umbrellas and anything else you may need for the day available next to the snack stand. Directly North of the Volleyball courts is a flourishing water wise landscaping in a unique santa fe style home. This is a beautiful example of using cactus, aloes, euphorbia and succulents all blended together in various sizes and shapes. There are different flowers blooming all year-long here and I have enjoyed the beauty of this home for years!

♥ Head back over to the Lofty Bean Coffee Bar to get your car and drive North of Hwy 101 to about a mile. Take a Left on Marchetta street at the Stop Sign. Try a California Burrito at Juanita’s Taco Shop. Don’t let the decor scare you, locals know this taco shop has a reputation for great tasting burritos after a day of sun and surf. Great tacos and breakfast burritos too.

ALOES IN BLOOM

♥ The winter months are when most aloes are at their peak blooming season and also a good time to plant them into the landscape. Aloes are succulents and come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes from ground cover and shrub-like clumping to tree style varieties. Finding the perfect fit for a drought tolerant area should be easy!

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a medicinal aloe aiding in the healing of scrapes, burns and cuts and also considered an anti-aging plant.

Aloe barberae: This tree can reach over 20 feet

Aloe microstigma

This is a nice small aloe that boasts orange candelabra blooms.

Aloe verox

This aloe is big and heavy, I use it to cover a large area on my back hillside landscaping. The word ‘verox’ means fierce due to the spiny edges.

Aloe plicatilis

This is one of my favorites. Small tree-like aloe with smooth upright leaves and a gorgeous orange flower-burst.

Aloe microstigma

Another beauty that turns reddish when in bright sun, or green if planted in some shade.

Most aloes can tolerate cold weather down to 25 degrees. Plant them in well-drained soil or cactus mix for best results. Enjoy blooms in the winter months when everything else in the garden is waiting for spring! My favorite part about aloes is how they attract hummingbirds into my yard, adding another benefit to aloes in the landscape.

Using flower frogs is the easiest way to create a quick floral or succulent design. These photos below show a 1 inch Flower Frog in a small dish with several succulent cuttings from my yard. This arrangement will last for months with only a weekly watering and partial indoor light.

These are my favorites this year from other websites, blogs and online stores. A variety of “DIY” Do-it-Yourself sites that show how to make and create these beautiful succulent designs. Simple and elegant, drought tolerant, lush looking and green!

Garden in a Christmas bulb from: floragrubb.com...It looks like these were dropped in and positioned with a long pair of tweezers. Air plant with moss. Nice idea!

Have you ever wondered how to make a Succulent Wreath? Purchasing these beauties can be expensive, but if you can acquire cuttings from a friend or neighbor wreaths can be a very inexpensive and luxurious Do-It-Yourself Project. Square and Heart wreaths look great too.
