Remember Pink Flamingos?

If you’re in the baby boomer generation then you do remember Pink Flamingo’s which were very popular from the 1950′s to the 1970′s.  If you’re in the YouTube generation then this blog does not apply. Do you love those pink plastic birds or hate them? Do you consider them an eye sore, or do you mentally categorize them in the genre of garden art? Cast your votes! Maybe it is a case of bad taste being acceptable now. For those of us with a flair for nostalgia these pink flamingos can stir up a happy memory of grandma’s front yard.

I remember growing up in Arizona and seeing these pink flamingo’s dotted on front lawns much like today’s garden gnomes, which by the way give me the creeps. I do like these pink flamingo’s photographed in an artsy little backyard garden I encountered over the weekend. I thought this photograph of flamingos with the green succulent in the foreground would make a nice Garden Design Blog today!

FYI- Thinking of that perfect gift for that special someone this holiday season? Pink Flamingos are still easy to find online for about $10.00 per bird. I confess to ordering a few today, but I promised my family I would keep them off the front lawn.

funny! and fun. A few years ago some high school kids were putting pink flamingos on peoples yards… the birds made the rounds to several houses “landing” on one yard one weekend and ending up on another the next in a “pay it forward” kind of way!

I am guessing that you vote “no” on liking pink plastic birds on the lawn? O.K. suggestion- How about some garden gnomes in camouflage?

I adore pink flamingos! In my last garden I had about 25 of them, all painted differently by myself and my friends, doing a conga line in the jungle area. I even won the “tacky yard art contest” a few years ago for my painted flamingos!

I predict these flamingo lawn adornments will be popping up everywhere again soon. I also saw those large, plastic Christmas Snowmen were being sold through Pottery Barn for the holidays…everything old is new again!

Thanks too for the wonderful organic italian herb salt. I rubbed it all over my Thanksgiving turkey and it was so good! Any chance you will provide the recipe?

As for the flamingos…a few tastefully placed flamingos look great in the garden and add a nice “retro” feeling. Maybe you could have readers submit photos of flamingo use (or abuse?)from all over??. I can think of a house up the street that has a couple of flocks in their front yard/driveway area. Some of them are even wearing sunglasses! :)
As for the garden gnomes…yes, gnomes (and clowns) are creepy. But I have to say, I do have a small Travelocity gnome in my kitchen window-the kids gave it to me for Christmas. I love it because it represents adventure and travel in far-flung places. He doesn’t creep me out.
